finance_300_rfpwo.jpgHalf-way through my 10 ways to get lucky posts I decided to write about something much more important and appropriate for New Years. My first post was New Years Resolution 2008, Lose Weight or Get Lucky. I am happy and proud to say that I took my own advice and have kept up to my New Year’s resolution of starting and keeping to this blog. I started this blog on December 4th and this is now my 17th article and I can feel myself going strong way into 2008 and beyond. I appreciate the encouragement and support from my readers and once again encourage all of my readers to continue emailing me at lucky@helpyourselfgetlucky.com and leaving comments on my page.

Now that I have tackled my new year’s resolution and built the habit of writing regularly and always having the blog on my mind, I can make a second new year’s resolution and become even luckier. My new New Year’s resolution is to keep monthly financial statements for myself. Every month, I will go over my income, expenses, assets and liabilities and I will track them on a balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement. I decided to do this because I have been reading a few books from the Rich Dad’s series, specifically Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money–That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!, Cashflow Quadrant: Rich Dad’s Guide to Financial Freedom and Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing: What the Rich Invest in, That the Poor and the Middle Class Do Not!. Robert Kiyosaki, the author of the series is adamant that becoming financially literate is the only way to get ahead financially in life. Once you are financially literate, you will be a more educated investor by being able to see into any business or corporation. Numbers don’t lie. A company cannot hide anything from their financial statements but most people don’t know how to read them so they will never know how the company actually runs and how good or bad of an investment it is.

I always thought that I was good when it came to my personal finances. I never carry a balance on my credit card and I always spend less than I make. When I looked at my savings account, I would be impressed with myself at how well I was coming along. But when I put everything down on my statements and I was able to look at a snapshot of my financial life, I realized that I was not doing as well as I thought I was. I am in debt for my student loans from college and from the purchase of my new car last November. I never really thought of these as debt because they were controlled. I would pay the same thing every month and they would be paid off within a certain amount of years. When I look at the picture as a whole, I am in debt and I need to get out of it if I am going to get ahead in my financial life.

Seeing the big picture of what you are worth and where all of your money is coming from and going to lets you know exactly what you need to do to get into better financial shape. Now that I have seen my life at a glance, I will start building up my investment and my passive income and also try and lower the debt so that I can get ahead. I will look at my financial statements on a regular basis and recreate them at the end of every month. By learning how to put together my own statements, I am starting to understand more about how companies put together their statements. This is one of the first steps in my becoming financially literate and eventually financially free. Being financially literate is a huge skill that can lead to tons of luckortunity. Being financially free can put you in the position to take advantage of even more luckortunity.

I will blog more about my financial journey as time goes on. In the meanwhile, I suggest that you make some financial statements for yourselves see where you stand and how you can improve your financial wellbeing. If you want a blank copy of the financial template I made for myself, email me at lucky@helpyourselfgetlucky.com or leave a comment with your email address and I would be glad to send it over.

Luck is Risky Business

risky-business-cruise-400a012507.jpgThis is my fourth post in my series of 10 on how to increase your luck and create Luckortunity.

Most people don’t like risk, they would rather have certainty. The problem with that is that they will wake up one day and realize that nothing has changed and that they have never gained anything. If you think about it, the only way to gain anything is to take a risk. You could risk being rejected for a position, you can risk losing money, and you can even risk a friendship with a friend of the opposite sex that you like. But just think of all the alternatives, you can get that position, you can make money or you can find out that the feeling is mutual with your friend and live happily ever after.

Think of the worst case scenario, you get rejected for a position that you really wanted but that doesn’t matter since positions come and go and another one will come along just as quickly as this one did. On top of that you feel good about trying and then learn something from the experience. Peter Kash would thank every single person that rejected him because he knew that every “No” he received brought him one step closer to an eventual “Yes”. You can even ask why you were rejected and learn how you can improve yourself for the next position that comes along.

In terms of the money, when you are risking, always make sure that it is an educated risk. Don’t just gamble your money away at a casino, do some research and know what you are investing in. Then you will be able to make an educated decision and if you lose, you will learn a lesson that will bring you closer to making a winning investment. Most people get scared off by any loss which paralyzes them financially and they never take a risk again. If you look at any self made millionaire out there, you will see that they lost money on numerous occasions but what made them their money was their continuing to take risks and not giving up after a loss.

Losing a good friend is really tough but can you imagine living the rest of your life as friends with someone you feel so much more for? I think the bigger risk is not telling your friend your feelings.

Now look at the best case scenario. You get the position you wanted, you make a ton of money and you get the guy or girl of your dreams to spend the rest of your life with. Each of these risks can end up paying you dividends for life and take you in a whole new direction.

Now tell me, what is the real risk? Going for it or just letting the opportunity fade away? Leave me a comment if you’ve been in a similar situation where you were faced with a potentially life altering decision.

Blog to the Future

This is my fourth post in my series of 10 on how to increase your luck and create Luckortunity.

I just heard something that blew my mind away. I heard that technology was doubling every 18 months and the internet was doubling in size even faster. I knew that we were in the information age and that the world is moving quickly but I never thought about how fast it was actually moving. Ferris Bueller from one of my favorite movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” He couldn’t be more right. Some people do the same thing day in and day out and wake up 10 years down the line completely lost asking themselves “where did all the time go?” and “when did that happen?”.

In the information age, to get ahead, you need information. You need to know what is going on, what new products and services are available, where technology is going. Without it, you will miss plenty of opportunities. Opportunities to make money, to retire earlier, to be happier, have more free time, and many other incredible things.

To keep up with the times many people will tell you to read a newspaper. This is a good idea but not a great one. I used to read the newspaper every morning until I realized how much time I was wasting reading about things like the OJ Simpson case of the 90’s and yet again, the OJ Simpson case of this decade. If something happens in my city, I might be interested in reading about it but anything else, I would be just as well off reading just the headlines on www.cnn.com or www.news.google.com. If the story was important or really interesting, I will read the first paragraph and maybe a little more. You see, the problem with newspapers is that you don’t need 90% of the information in them.

To keep on top of what really matters, you need a source that is going to give you what you want and what you are really interested in. After all you find more opportunities in things that you are interested in than things that you have either slight or no interest in because it excites you and your mind starts to see thing differently. If you are bored by a subject, chances are that you will never see the opportunities in it. But there are so many opportunities in this world that you can find more than your share in just the subjects that interest you.

I find blogs to be one of the best sources of information out there. There are so many of them so you have to experiment a little and find the topics you enjoy, the writing style you like and the information you crave. This way you can keep up with the latest information in this forever changing world, for what you really care about and are interested in. There are thousands and thousands of blogs on every single subject so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something you like. I will write a post shortly on how to find your personal blogroll.

StumbleUpon the Greatest Luckortunity

stumble-image.jpgThis is the third post in my series of 10 on how to increase your luck and create Luckortunity.

For those of you that don’t know what StumbleUpon is, it is a social bookmarking network where people can surf the internet and mark off all the sites that they like. Other people will be doing the same and every time you click that you do or don’t like a site that you visit, it builds up your profile of what you like and don’t like. You can also select topics that you are interested in. Then you click on a little magical button on your toolbar that take you to different sites across the net that fit your interest. It matches you up with other stumblers with similar taste and sends you to sites that they liked. There is more to it but this is the gist.

I remember when I was a little kid, I used to complain all the time that I was bored. I had nothing to do and my parents would always tell me to read a book, go outside, play a game but that never really did it for me. There is only so much of the same thing you can do over and over again before you need a change, new games, new books, etc… Even when the internet came out and I started using it, I would go to chat rooms to fill half my time and check my email with the other half. I wanted to see some of the World Wide Web but I didn’t know where to start or which sites to go to. I would make up domains and see if there was anything there but that gets boring if you don’t start finding sites that you like. When StumbleUpon came out, it solved all of those problems. I can now stumble for hours through thousands of quality sites that I am interested in. It opens up so many new doors to quality material that I never had access to before.

Now you might ask, how does this lead to increasing your luck? Since I am stumbling through sites that I am interested in, they mean more to me than just random sites. Every time I have a stumble session, I have a new idea of something to do, something to write about, somewhere to go or something else to research. I learn about new things out on the market and new applications on the net and in the blogosphere. Everything in life can turn into a chain reaction. By learning one little piece of information, it can lead to all sorts of new ideas and activities.

StumbleUpon is actually indirectly responsible for me starting this blog as well as many other ventures. I’ll blog about that another day but for now, I’ll let you go Stumble your way to Luckortunity.

Leave me a comment if with your Stumble induced ideas and successes.

Don’t listen to your Mother, Speak to Strangers!

In my last post I started a series of 10 posts on different ways to increase your luck and create Luckortunity. Today’s post is number 2 out of 10 and tells you how starting a conversation with a stranger can lead to new luck and more opportunities.

I know your mother told you never to speak to strangers growing up but I am telling you the exact opposite. Although your mother’s advice was great when you were 4 years old and very vulnerable to kidnappers, pedophiles and other lowlifes, but now that you can hopefully use your judgment about people and protect yourself, you have to unlearn what you knew as a kid. Unfortunately your mother didn’t say “never speak to strangers until you are older” since now that we are older, it is very hard to un-program something that is so ingrained in our subconscious that it is just second nature to ignore people that we do not know.

Although you can get along fine not speaking to strangers and only speaking to someone new if you are properly introduced, you are missing out on so many interesting people and tons of opportunities that can come up. Taking the subway every day, I see people waiting for a train for sometimes over an hour in a crowded station without even looking at anyone else, never mind speaking to someone else. By doing this, they are missing out on the possibility of a good conversation, or maybe that there was a problem with a train that will cause even more delays, which knowing about can save you some time by deciding to take an alternate mode of transportation. Worst case scenario, their mother also told them not to talk to strangers and they snub you completely but the best case scenario can be that they become a good friend, hook you up with a great job or business opportunity or a great stock tip.

A lot of people have a hard time meeting people of the opposite sex to go out with or start a relationship. A major cause for this is that people are so used to not speaking to strangers that they can’t force themselves to speak to the girl at the other end of the bar or even worse, because they never speak to strangers, they don’t have the skills to start a conversation and break the ice.

It is very hard to wake up one day and realize “maybe my parents were wrong”, or “maybe something that I believed in for so long is not true”. The longer you live a certain way, the stronger your habits are and the harder they are to break or change. Some people just give in to their habits and say “it’s too late to change”, some people try and convince themselves that they are right even though they know that they are wrong. One thing is for sure, if these people don’t change, they will be kissing away tons of new opportunities that could have come their way. It is hard to change but in the long run, it will be even harder for you down the line if you don’t change. As always, taking the easy route now will lead to harder route in the future and the opposite is true as well. For example, my 3 year old son is a first born son, grandson, nephew etc. and he gets spoiled with toys and treats and everything else. At one point my wife and I took him to a store and he asked for something and we decided to get it for him. The next time we were in a store he asked for something again and expected to get it but we said no. He threw a fit. We stood our ground and the next time this happened and we didn’t buy him what he wanted, he still cried but he got over it a lot quicker. It is easy to give in but it will cause problems down the line but if you stand your ground now, down the line your life will be a lot easier.

I do speak to strangers every once in a while but not as often as I should. I am thinking of starting at some point to speak to a stranger at least once a day (or maybe week) and blog about it for a little while to see the true power of speaking to strangers. I challenge you to meet a stranger and see where that takes you. Leave me comment to let me know how it went.

How My 3 Year old Taught Me to Keep My Eye on My Goals

You may have noticed that I haven’t written in a few days. This is especially bad since my last post was the first of a series of 10 posts on how to increase your luck. I was supposed to post every day or at least every second or third day which would give my readers the 10 ways to increase their luck in about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, i lost site of my goals and my posting came to somewhat of a stop.

Not long ago I made myself a few lists of goals that I wanted to accomplish over the next few months, year, 5 years, 10 years and 20 years. I was very proud of myself for getting them down on paper and making a list of things that I think are actually realistic. One of my goals was to build up this blog and post articles regularly. For the next few days after writing down my goals, I looked at them every morning and thought about how I would bring myself closer to my goals each day. After a few days, I stopped looking at my goals every morning. Maybe I thought that I had them committed to memory, maybe I got lazy but the realization that I came to is that “out of sight, out of mind”. I couldn’t believe it, the days that I looked at my goals in the morning were very productive and the days that I didn’t look at them were just the opposite. I think that was my problem for most of my life, I didn’t write down my goals and I certainly did not look them over each day. I wrote my goals in the first place because I woke up one day and realized that although I have had some accomplishments over the last whole bunch of years, I have not even come close to my potential especially financially.

I can’t take all the credit for my realization above, it was pretty much my 3 year old son that made me realize that I need to keep looking at my goals every day. My wife made a 3 foot tall chart for my son and hung it next to his bed so he knows what he needs to do every day from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to sleep. The chart is nicely decorated with pictures so he knows what everything is. He wakes up, goes to potty, brushes his teeth, eats breakfast and so on. His day ends with brushing his teeth, reading a story and going to sleep.

On Friday night, my sister in law was over and went to lie down in my son’s bed. My son went over to her and said “if you sleep in my bed, you have to follow the chart”. He then told her exactly what she needed to do. At that point I realized if you want to build up good habits and accomplish your goals, you need to have them written down and very visible. It also helps if they are in public view because when other people know about your goals, you become more motivated to accomplish. Many people don’t mind failing when nobody else knows about it but if other people do know, they try harder to show that they can accomplish.

Kids are some of the best teachers out there, they make you see things that are right in front of your eyes but you just don’t notice. Another thing my son can do is tell you every time a TV show says the word “stupid” because he knows that “stupid” is a bad word. I watch the same shows and don’t even notice.

Increase Your Luck By Taking a Different Route to Work

The next 10 posts will be 10 different ways to increase your luck and create Luckortunity. Today’s post is how taking a new or different route can lead to new luck and more opportunities.

People often take the same route to work and back every single day turning every commute into a routine. After a while, they don’t notice anything around them and could probably make it to work with their eyes closed. People get so used to the same thing that they shut out anything that is going on, even right in front of them. If there is an accident on the road, the only reason many people notice is because it causes traffic, otherwise, it might not even register.

By taking a new route to work, it forces you to pay attention to what is around you so that you know where you are going and you head in the right direction. By paying attention you notice many things that can lead to opportunities such as learning about a new local business that offers a service that you were never able to get in your neighborhood.

Taking a new or different route lets you see something different than you do on a normal day and can put you in a better mood. When taking the same route everyday and seeing the same things every single day, you can get bored, tired and frustrated which will lead to a worse mood.

On my Luckortunity page, I mention Professor Wiseman’s analogy of luck being like an apple orchard. Taking the same route to work each day is like going to the same corner of the apple orchard every day expecting to find the same amount of apples as you found on the first day. On the first day you will have more apples than you know what to do with but a few days later, you will start to see less and less apples to choose from. After a while, there will be hardly any apples left to pick and if you want more apples, you will have to go to another spot in the orchard. The same thing goes for luck. Everywhere you go has a certain amount of luck or opportunity it can offer. After taking the same path over and over again, you can run out of all the luck it has to offer.

I take the subway to work and back everyday so I don’t have much of a chance to change my route but there are a few alternate routes that I sometimes take by transferring at different stations. The main way that I change things up is by taking the train at different times so I get to see all the different crowds that use the train. During busier times I can be squished like a sardine and read a paper over someone’s shoulder. When it is a little less crowded, I get to see the wonderful performing artists on New York City’s subway system. There are 5 year old break dancers, musicians and my personal favorite a homeless comedian who complains that people are always hanging out in his living room and putting their feet up on his couches but it’s ok because he only pays $2.00 rent for one of the greatest locations in the world.

When the subway is not that busy, I can sit back and read a book, listen to music or even take out my laptop and write something. Many times I download the feeds from my rss reader and read all of my favorite blogs. I also have the opportunity to meet new people that are waiting for the same train or not sure of which train to take. There are tons of tourists that visit New York and it is always fun to speak to them and find out where they are from, what they do and what they have seen so far in the city. You can always offer them suggestion of what to see and what is a waste of time.

Trying to be Lucky Makes Me Smarter and Luckier

When I wrote my goals and made the conscious decision to follow and achieve them, without consciously knowing it, I took upon myself a ton of work. One of my goals was to build this blog. It seems pretty simple on the surface but if I really want to build a successful blog, I am going to have to make it something that people will want to read on a regular basis. Also, I have to define what a successful blog is. Is it having 100 visits per day? Maybe it is having 1000 unique hits per day. Does it depend on how many people subscribe to my rss fees? Maybe it has to do with how much income I can produce through this blog. In that case, I have to figure out how I would make my money. Should I use Google Adsense? Should I use other ad providers? Or should I sell my own ad space? Maybe I should rely on tips. I can also become an affiliate for all kinds of different companies and make commissions on sales and signups through my site. As you can see, everyone must define their own version of success and each definition can be very different.

When Making Goals, the Goals Must be Defined.

I am trying to take this goal very seriously even though it is a lot more complex than I originally imagined. I need to learn enough about blogging and the blogisphere to gage my progress and success. I also need to learn what makes a good blog and then put as much of it into play as possible. I have to figure out what layout is best, how to track my blog and how to advertise it.

As I try to go through every step, I find myself forcing my way to research more and more blogs and learn everything I can. Along the way, I end up learning what I was looking for but at the same time, I am learning so much more and discovering so many more opportunities. For example, today while reading Lazy Man and Money, I learned about Prosper.com where I was able to sign up for a free account to start lending money to different people and earn interest, just like a bank.

Most of all, I find myself busier than ever but more in control of my time and much more accomplished. If only I made goals for myself years ago, I could be so much farther ahead in life. Well, that’s my luck changing for the better.

The Game of Life and New Opportunities

game-of-life.jpgOver the last few months I have been thinking about starting up this blog. The truth is that I spent the first major part of my life just gliding by and not thinking much about the future. I always thought about growing up, getting married, working and all of that but I never really thought about it. I thought if I was lucky I would graduate, get a good job, find a wife and so on. I used to hope a lot. The alternative was a life of bad luck where I can’t get that good job, find my wife or find the wrong person for my wife. I thought that it was all just a big Hasbro The Game of Life (which I used to love growing up) and luck will determine how your life went with very little input from you as long as you go through the motions.

A few years ago I learned a little more about what luck really is and where it comes from. I like to call it luckortunity since life is not about what luck gives you, it is all about what you give luck. It is the opportunity that shows up at your doorstep which most people just ignore. They figure they can grab it another time or rationalize why it wasn’t a good opportunity to begin with. Now “good luck” is a step further, it is the opportunity that you bring upon yourself. If you learn a certain skill, you open up all sorts of new opportunities. If you learn a new language, you can now socialize or do business with a huge new group of people. “Bad Luck” is when you don’t go the extra mile and therefore miss out on all of those opportunities. If you find the perfect job that describes you completely, you get an interview and then get passed up on the job because you didn’t have one skill that you could have learned if you only paid attention in class. This could be anything from knowledge of Microsoft Office to speaking a second language to anything else. It could be huge or it could be small. Being passed up on a job because of a skill that you know you could have had will make you want to shoot yourself.

Over the last few years, I knew the difference between luck and chance but I never really put what I knew into practice. It was only in hindsight that I was able to see how luck was either helping me or not. I was not getting very lucky because I wasn’t actively making new opportunities for myself. A few months ago, I decided it was time for a change. It was time to start living life instead of gliding through it. I decided that I was going to take an active role in my luck and get right into the drivers seat. It’s not so easy to do and it means changing my lifestyle a little but I know that years down the line, I will thank myself. Writing this blog is one of the ways that I am living and creating new opportunities. First I am organizing myself, getting a little disciplined to be able to write and keep to something, learning tons of new computer skills and most of all, keeping my eyes wide open for new opportunities.

Day Number One With Goals

Yesterday I wrote about how I realized that in order to get anything done, I needed to make clear goals for myself. A few of the goals on my list had to do with this blog. I wanted to fix up the blog, add Google Adsense, add some articles, etc. Those were just in my first list of short term goals. In a year, I am hoping to have at least 60 articles on this blog. In reality I would like to have at least 100 but I made sure not to put too many things on my list since it might get a little unreasonable. I can do millions of things but I can’t do all of them at the same time. I need to leave some time to accomplish all my other goals while leaving a large amount of time to slack off. Slacking off is not one of my goals, I just know myself and just because I have goals now and I’m a little more organized, I cant expect myself to change overnight. I know it’s going to be a slow process but as I wrote yesterday, I have 20 years to complete my goals. I am sure some will change and some will expand but at least I have the step by step instructions on how I am going to get there.

My Goals List and the Mapquest of my Life

MapquestMost of my life I just drifted from day to day and year to year. I went through the motions like going to school, finding a job, and working. I just recently woke up and realized how much time has gone by and I don’t have anything financially to show for it. I want to retire one day, maybe when I’m 65 but preferably when I’m much younger and I have nothing saved up. I have been saving money regularly but that goes into my savings account that gets peanuts in interest and always seems to find expenses to pay for. I bought a car, I’d love to buy a house to live in, and I’d like to take some vacations over the next few years. Every time I save any money, it’s gone.

I realized that if you are traveling, you need a starting point and a destination and then a map of how you are going to get from point A to point B. The same goes for life, if you don’t have any goals, you’re not going to get anywhere, mainly because you won’t know where to go. After this discovery, I used an entire 70 minute commute home from work to jot down some goals. I made five separate lists of goals for short term, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and 20 years. I made sure that each list paved the path to the next set of goals. Most of the goals have something financial to do with them but I also put down losing 40 pounds this year. I know it is a lot but I am only so overweight because I eat like a pig late at night and always push off exercising. In my short term goals, I just put down to exercise and in my 5 year list I put to stay under 190 pounds. I put the same for the 10 and 20 year lists.

I plan on using these goals as a road map for my life. I placed the lists in my wallet and plan on looking at them every day to make sure I stay on path, just like I would look at the mapquest directions when I’m on a road trip.

Note: Writing these blog articles are on my lists and that is why they are getting done.
