This is the third post in my series of 10 on how to increase your luck and create Luckortunity.
For those of you that don’t know what StumbleUpon is, it is a social bookmarking network where people can surf the internet and mark off all the sites that they like. Other people will be doing the same and every time you click that you do or don’t like a site that you visit, it builds up your profile of what you like and don’t like. You can also select topics that you are interested in. Then you click on a little magical button on your toolbar that take you to different sites across the net that fit your interest. It matches you up with other stumblers with similar taste and sends you to sites that they liked. There is more to it but this is the gist.
I remember when I was a little kid, I used to complain all the time that I was bored. I had nothing to do and my parents would always tell me to read a book, go outside, play a game but that never really did it for me. There is only so much of the same thing you can do over and over again before you need a change, new games, new books, etc… Even when the internet came out and I started using it, I would go to chat rooms to fill half my time and check my email with the other half. I wanted to see some of the World Wide Web but I didn’t know where to start or which sites to go to. I would make up domains and see if there was anything there but that gets boring if you don’t start finding sites that you like. When StumbleUpon came out, it solved all of those problems. I can now stumble for hours through thousands of quality sites that I am interested in. It opens up so many new doors to quality material that I never had access to before.
Now you might ask, how does this lead to increasing your luck? Since I am stumbling through sites that I am interested in, they mean more to me than just random sites. Every time I have a stumble session, I have a new idea of something to do, something to write about, somewhere to go or something else to research. I learn about new things out on the market and new applications on the net and in the blogosphere. Everything in life can turn into a chain reaction. By learning one little piece of information, it can lead to all sorts of new ideas and activities.
StumbleUpon is actually indirectly responsible for me starting this blog as well as many other ventures. I’ll blog about that another day but for now, I’ll let you go Stumble your way to Luckortunity.
Leave me a comment if with your Stumble induced ideas and successes.
