I am writing this article from my hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am here for a very short 24 hours on business all the way from New York City and it is amazing to what one can learn from such a short trip.
You can get lucky while you are squished between 2 strangers on a crowded 767 airplane.
Since this business trip was very last minute and there are very few direct flights between New York and Buenos Aires, I got stuck in one of the worst seats on the plane. Normally a person in this situation will try and get through the flight by sleeping, reading a book or walking the aisles until the flight attendant tells them to sit down already. I chose to take the road less traveled and started a conversation with one of the people sitting next to me. The person on the other side was one of those people that tried to just get through the flight.
The person that I did end up talking to was actually a really nice guy from Buenos Aires who was visiting New York for the first time. He told me about his experience but even more, he told me what to expect in Buenos Aires. It happened to be that he used to work at the hotel that I was staying at and that I am currently planning a major conference at. He gave me a list of things to watch out for and some other great advice which really helped me on my site visit.
Besides all of the business advice, he gave me some history of the city and some places that I should visit. The best thing was that he works in TV production in Argentina and is involved in marketing in the country. We exchanged business cards and we will be in touch and maybe even do business together.
Learning another language can increase your luckortunity.
During my trip I have a colleague working as a translator for me since I do not speak Spanish. I do know a few words here and there and can count and put together a few sentences and some other things that I learned from watching Dora the Explorer with my kids. I noticed so many lost opportunities all day today because most people do not speak any English at all. There were some places I visited that I am sure I would have gotten more out of if I knew what I was looking at.
While I am here I am trying my hardest to put together some broken sentences to communicate with the locals. When I get back to New York, I am going start learning more Spanish and maybe some basics of other languages so that I will not lose out on opportunities like this in the future.

This past week while I was driving, I was listening to the radio and the song I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack came on. It’s a nice sounding song but it is one of those that you tune out and use as background music while you are doing something else. One line from the song did hit me though. The line is “Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens”. After hearing that line, I started paying more attention to the rest of the lyrics. Sometimes you can hear a song 100 times and it will only hit you on the 101st time.
The whole song is about living life to the fullest. To make sure that you don’t take anything for granted and that you really appreciate the little things in life. It tells you not to be afraid of taking chances because even if they are mistakes, they are worth making because the risk of not taking them is just too great.
The song is all about giving advice to get lucky. It tells us never to lose our “sense of wonder” because when that happens, we get stuck in a place in life and lock out all the luck that can come our way. A sense of wonder can lead to infinite discoveries and possibilities that you can bring into your life which lead to luckortunity.
The one line that caught my ear though is one of the lines that are advice in the form of hope. Another line is the title of the song “And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance”. I like that the song uses advice in the form of hope because advice can only go so far. People can give you great advice, you can go to 100 seminars, you can read 1000 books, but in the end, all we can do is hope that it sinks in and that you take the advice and do something with it. Action is the most powerful thing of all.
The way to make sure that “when one door closes” that “one more opens” is to keep as many options open as possible. Keep your mind open and always keep learning. The more you learn and know, the more options you have.
On a very simple basic level to get the point across, imagine a print newspaper that is losing its entire readership. The door is closing. The door that opens is the entire online market. The only way to take advantage of this door opening is by being educated and keeping up with the times.
The last point and the theme of the song “when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance”, is something that every single person can follow every day of his life. Whenever an opportunity comes along, jump on it and make sure you take advantage of it because if you don’t you will end up sitting it out and watching someone else take advantage of the opportunity. There is a saying “dance like nobody is watching”. Jump on opportunities and don’t care about what the world around you thinks. Don’t let negative people convince you not to take the opportunities when they show up because if you do, you will never get lucky or get ahead in life. So when you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance like nobody is watching.

1. You don’t want it badly enough!
When you want something badly enough, you get obsessed with it. You buy books and magazines on the subject, you network with other people who have accomplished what you would like to accomplish and you do everything in your power to accomplish it yourself.
My 3 year old lets me know when he wants something and trust me, he doesn’t let me forget it. He reminds me about it every single day, multiple times. He even throws it in to conversation out of nowhere for example the conversation below:
Me: Do you want to go play outside
My Son: Yeah, and then tomorrow you can go buy my toy for me.
Pretty much, if you want something badly enough, you breath it.
2. You don’t know how to get there.
The reason that most people haven’t accomplished their goals, be it weight or financial status, is because they just don’t know how to do it. They may know that you have to exercise and diet but they don’t know what exercises to do and what to eat. Even if they do know what exercises to do, they don’t use proper form or know how often to do them. They also don’t know how often to switch them up for other exercises or change the intensity. Many people know about all sorts of diets but they don’t know enough about one diet to have any success with it.
Some people think that since the Atkins diet forbids carbs and people on the diet lose a lot of weight, then carbs must be evil. They then look at the South Beach diet and see that carbs are not evil so they start having carbs again. People like to pick and choose what they like best about each diet or exercise. But, doing that, they are sure to fail.
If you really want to be successful at anything, you must educate yourself. You can read books and follow them exactly, or you can hire a nutritionist or personal trainer. Just do your research and make sure that they are reliable. No one said losing weight was easy. It takes a lot of hard work, including the homework beforehand.
3. You like to eat too much.
If you are anything like me, you really like to eat. Eating is so enjoyable that sometimes I eat just because food is there. Subconsciously I think that even after I am full, I will get the same satisfaction that I will get when I was hungry. I then keep eating until I can’t eat anymore. It’s like a drug addict trying to get a comparable high to his first great experience.
If you are serious about losing weight, you must want it badly enough and teach yourself to enjoy food a little bit at a time. Think to yourself that you had enough now but you will have more in a few hours at your next meal. It takes some training but it is worth it.
4. You don’t like to exercise.
There are plenty of ways to exercise and burn some calories and they don’t all consist of walking aimlessly on a treadmill. Being overweight is not a natural condition. The human body is so complex and it is incredible to learn how it functions. People should be naturally burning the calories that they need to burn to keep in shape, without any real effort. It is only with modern technology, TV, office jobs and lack of movement that People, specifically Americans get overweight and need to exercise to burn additional calories.
Here are some easy ways to burn more calories during your day:
· Stand up and pace while you are on the phone
· Take stairs instead of elevators
· Sit on the floor instead of a couch to watch TV (it is proven that you move more and burn more calories like this).
· Park at the end of a parking lot to get more walking done.
· Walk to close by places instead of driving.
· Ride your bike or rollerblade to places a little further.
In addition to the examples above, you can also try playing team sports which can be a lot of fun, you just need to make time for them which brings me to my last point.
5. You don’t have time.
The truth is, if something is important to you, you will make time for it. Think of anything that you really wanted badly in life and notice that you were able to make time for it. If it is important, you will find the time somewhere. It might mean cutting out some TV time, some sleep, a couple hours on weekends or even your lunch breaks.
The good thing is that exercising doesn’t have to replace any part of your life so making time for it is not that hard. If you want to spend time with family and friends, you can play a game of ball with them instead of going to a movie. If you want to watch more TV, you can get on a treadmill with a TV in front of it.
Being too tired doesn’t work as an excuse either since exercising actually gives you more energy. Imagine that, if you start exercising, you may create a new time slot to fill in your day since you will be more energized.

My one year old daughter just took her first couple of steps recently and it is an amazing site to see. To see how much effort and determination she puts into each movement of her foot while trying to stay balanced is amazing. The way she does it is by holding onto our couch or coffee table and pulling herself up. She then lets go with one hand and tries to stay balanced. Then comes the movement of one foot slowly moving forward, almost dragging itself on the floor to keep some security. Finally, when she has stretched as far as she can go while still holding on, she lets go of the table or couch and takes a step. If she can stay balanced, she takes another step. The most important detail that I omitted was that she doesn’t just do this for the hell of it, she does this when she is trying to get something. She has a goal and she is literally using baby steps to achieve it.
Lessons I learn from my children are some of the most enjoyable learning experiences in my life. I watch them grow and at the same time, they cause me to grow. The important lesson my daughter recently taught me is when trying to achieve a goal that you have never achieved before, you must go about it slowly and carefully by taking baby steps.
I ended off yesterday’s post with the importance of making it a point to become a better person each day. Today I want to talk about baby steps. No matter what the goal is, no matter how big it is, you can achieve it if you move towards it at a slow but steady pace. You just have to break the goal or task down into tiny little pieces and do one little piece at a time. They say that “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. It’s a great example but anyone can take anything and turn it into their own personal example. Just think of yourself and your life. When you were born, your goal was to grow up to be a toddler and then a child and then a teenager and so on. When you started school, it was you goal to graduate someday. You will notice that these goals cannot be accomplished in a day, year or multiple years, but each day you move forward towards your goal and each year you move even closer to achieving it.
Now that you have seen some large goals that you either didn’t have control over or never really thought about, look at something practical and much smaller. Imagine writing a term paper for school or a report for work. You start out by sitting in front of a blank screen on your computer, you crack your knuckles and then you get so overwhelmed by your task that you begin to procrastinate. The unlucky person will go get a snack for themselves, and then check their email, take a shower, or anything else to fool themselves into thinking that they are helping themselves. A lucky person will take out a pad and paper and break down the task into tiny little parts so that they can start moving forward.
The task list can look something like this:
- Write down my thesis or goal of the paper/report
- Decide how long the paper will be and which sections will be in it
- Jot down any points that I want to discuss in each section
At this point, you have a skeleton of your paper and with very little work your entire project is now more doable. Just continue breaking everything down into tiny tasks and taking baby steps to complete each one.
Once you are happy with the outline of your paper, you can take one topic to be discussed at a time and do research on only that topic. When you are finished, take the next topic. You will be finished before you know it and the unlucky person sitting next to you will just be finished checking his email for the 50th time.

Depression is in my opinion one of the worst sicknesses around. It causes a downhill whirlwind that digs you deeper and deeper into your self pity and causes you to rot in everyway possible. Depression takes you off track of any goals that you may have and may have been working hard to achieve. It makes you overeat, over sleep and watch way too much pointless TV. The longer the depression goes on, the worse you get and the further away it pulls you from your goals. The eating will throw off all of your health goals such as exercising and losing weight, and the sleeping and TV suck up all of your time so you have no time left to accomplish anything else.
To the outsider, a depressed person is a very sad sight. If you care about someone who is depressed you feel terrible because there is nothing you can do and if you don’t care about the person, you just want to get away from them since they bring you down.
I’m not sure where I got this from but I believe it to be the truth about depression. I believe that depression is caused by a feeling that you are not moving towards your goals fast enough. It could be that you don’t have goals and have nowhere to go. It could also mean that you have unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve. But I think in most cases, people consciously or not have realistic goals and expectations in life. The problem here is that life does not always give you what you want. There is a famous saying that “when life gives your lemons, make lemonade”. Lucky people make the lemonade and move on to bigger and better things. Unlucky people take the lemons and don’t know what to do with them so they get depressed. Depression is the roadblock on the path toward your goals.
You will notice that one of the best ways to fight off depression is to work on a goal with determination. It doesn’t matter which goal you work on, whether it is what is holding you down or something completely unrelated, working toward any goal will cure or at least push aside your depression. That is why working out and exercising help get rid of depression and put you in a good mood. It is because you are getting healthier and everybody whether they know it or not has a need to be as healthy as possible.
To handle depression, make sure that you act as soon as the feeling sets in. Go for a run, hit the gym, or work on any other small goal that you would like to achieve and that you can see the finish line for. Each little victory moves you ahead and turns you into new person. This new person is a more successful person since he has one more victory under his belt. Make a point of becoming a better person each day and you will not have to worry about depression.
Note: Depression is a very serious matter and at times needs professional help. This article is aimed at helping people escape the beginning stages of depression and preventing depression in the future.

Pretty much anywhere you go today, there will be some fine print somewhere that people are legally obligated to mention but they don’t want you to know about. You will find in on ads and commercials, lease agreements, membership forms and anything to do with money such as bank agreements, investments and credit applications.
You might find a medicine with tiny writing that mentions tens of side effects from anal leakage to death. People might think twice about taking certain meds. If everyone read every form or agreement from cover to cover, they would never have any time to enjoy whatever it is that they are buying. Credit cards have the best system. They send you a 20 page book of fine print with all kinds of legal jargon that would take you weeks to get through. To top it off, if you did spend the time wading through it, by the time you are finished, they send you a new book with their new policies. They are legally bound to inform you of any changes but when they send you the whole book over again and don’t highlight the changes, they might as well not send you anything.
Fine Print is something that we are accustomed to and because of this, our minds just block it out most of the time. Does this mean that we are signing our life away and need to just hope for the best?
The answer is NO. You don’t need to read all the fine print but you do need to be educated about what the fine print may contain. To educate yourself, know this:

If something looks too good, it probably is.
Medicine
A medicine that will cure any ailment (1% of the time in a study on Rats), probably needs to be looked into a little further. Instead of reading all the fine print, do a quick google search, read up on it a little and then ask your doctor about it once you are educated. Reading up on it first lets you ask educated questions instead of just taking someone’s word for it.
Credit Cards
A credit card with a 1% interest rate also is missing some information. What I have found to be successful is calling their customer service line and asking any questions you may have. All calls are recorded and the customer service representative is obligated to give you accurate information in words that you can understand.
Anytime you receive a letter that something has changed, call up customer service and find out what it is. I like American Express because they usually answer you within a couple of minutes. Other cards sometimes take half an hour to finally answer.
Car Lease
Have you seen the Honda Civic that is advertised for $159/month? They forget to tell you that the price is for a manual base model with $2500 down and all sorts of other service fees. Not to mention less miles included than the average lease and a higher cost per additional mile afterwards.
To get around this, I like to do some research on my own by going to http://www.consumerreports.org first because it gives you their unbiased ratings of the car you are looking for and all similar cars, broken down into every category as well as what they should cost. A membership is about $6/month or $26/year, definitely a good investment when you are looking for a car. My next step is to search around for other dealerships offering the same or similar cars and speak to sales reps from each. They are all in competition with each other so they are quick to give away each other’s secrets. After speaking to about 3 sales people, you will have a good picture of what the car should cost.
The Most Important Thing is when you are in doubt, speak to someone. The more people you speak to the luckier you get because each person will give you a little more information to help you piece everything together. Customer service agents, friends and sales people can all help you out. Speaking to people is more fun than reading and you will probably gain more from it as well. When you speak to people, you might find out about better products and services that you won’t find out about by struggling to understand the fine print for one company.

Unlucky people often think that they won’t gain anything from books, audio books, lectures or seminars. Although they often know about the subject, in my experience, there is always something new that they can learn.
Truth be told, a person can learn new things from a single lecture or book each time he hears or reads it. Even on the fifth time around, there is still new information that can be picked up and learned.
Studies have shown that the average person only retains three concepts from any book that they read. That means that if you read a book with 30 chapters, you will only really retain 10% of the information, if that at all. If a person would read the book again, they would pick up and retain more concepts. It is sometimes beneficial to read books several times over to make sure that you gain the maximum amount from the book.
The average book has multiple chapters and the average chapter has multiple points and sub points. The unlucky person will read a book once and think that they absorbed the entire book. They would feel that reading the book over again is pointless.
The point I am making is not to read every book and go to every lecture multiple times. The point is that a lucky person understands this and knows how to maximize his time. If he feels that reading the book a second time, he will read it a second time. The unlucky person would not even consider it.
Part of being lucky is knowing how to maximize your time. Nobody has time to do everything; the trick is to learn how to do as much as possible. If your choice is to reread a book that has valuable information in it or watch a tv show, choosing the tv show would be the unlucky choice.

Time is the Most Valuable Asset
The most valuable asset in the world is time. Time is the only asset in the world that is absolutely finite and once you lose some, you will never get it back. Time can be used to acquire other assets such as information which can lead to all kinds of monetary assets.
Money can be Acquired, Time Cannot
Money is great to have but money comes and goes and if you know how to make money, chances are that you will make much more than you lose. You can make money with time but you can never make more time.
Compound Interest is One of the Wonders of the World
Albert Einstein is quoted as saying “The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest”. Most people only consciously apply compound interest to money. They look for the best savings account or investment that will give them the most compound interest, dump their money in and wait for it to grow.
You have the option not to save money but to use it as it comes in. You can live paycheck to paycheck and never put money away. In fact, most of the world unfortunately does this. They then wake up 20 years down the line and try and figure out where all their money went and why are they still broke.
If you look at the big picture monetarily and see yourself 20 years down the line, it is a no-brainer to start saving for your future. The only question is, why stop there? You can get compound interest on a lot more than just money.
Get Compound Interest on Your Time
Just like with money, you have a choice to spend it or save it, you have almost the same option with time. The difference between money and time is that money you either spend or save and time you either use productively or you waste. Now, if you look at the big picture with time, you will realize that it is more important than money and you will start saving it up or using it towards a goal.
The end result of compound interest on time is the accomplishment of a goal. To use time productively, you must have a goal that you are working towards. Without a goal, you have no direction and will probably not invest your time wisely. Just like when you are looking for the best savings account or investment for money, you must find the best investment for your time to get the best result.
The great thing about time is that it can be invested towards whatever is most important to you. It could be your family, friends, health, your business or your hobbies. You just have to set your goals and work towards them. The longer range your goal is, the more compound interest you can get.
If you live day to day, you will do what is important for today but you will not be preparing yourself for years down the line. If you plan ahead and invest time into your goals, you will be building your future. Just think of prerequisites in school. To graduate, you need certain courses but to take those courses, you need their prerequisites. When you go to school, they pretty much map out your 4 year goal. It is to graduate from your program. Once you enter the real world, no one will tell you what you are going to need 4 years or longer down the line. You need to set your own goals and work towards them yourself.

To get lucky you need to be extremely flexible and I don’t mean being able to touch your toes or even put your foot around your head. I mean flexible in how you get things done. The world and everything around us changes at such a fast pace that what was good yesterday is not necessarily good today and what is good today, might not be good tomorrow. If you are set in your ways, you will never get lucky because you will not give the luckortuny a chance to get in.
Each day, you have to look at yourself and figure out if you are doing everything the absolutely best way you know possible. Ask yourself this question: “Knowing what I know now, is there anything that I would do differently?” If the answer is yes, then go ahead and start making some changes.
Most people are afraid of change and trying new things. If they would only realize that changing with the world or adapting to change is the only way to get ahead.
Some examples:
Relationships: A guy has been dating a girl for over a year and things were very good at first but as they got more comfortable with each other, the girl’s true personality came out. The guy learns that his girlfriend is really not the person he thought she was. Now, the guy feels that he has invested so much into the relationship that he will continue dating her just for that reason. If he would adapt to change, he would know it was time to move on.
Note 1: This could be the other way as well, where the guy is the one who shows his true self.
Note 2: I do not suggest just dropping the relationship when there is more invested in it such as marriage, children, etc. In those cases, a professional should be contacted.
Investments: John McDonald put together a stock portfolio that he is very proud of. He has 22 stocks from different industries and they are doing well. John leaves his stock alone and only checks up on it once a month to see how he is doing. He decided that this portfolio will fund his retirement.
One day while checking his portfolio, he notices that one of his stocks has been tumbling down. He gets worried but says to himself that it will go back up. Each month that he checks, it drops more and more.
By adapting to change, John would have looked into why the stock was dropping and consider replacing the stock with something else.
Education: A student declares a major in college and after 3 years, decides that he hates it and doesn’t want to study it anymore. Many people will decide at that point to just finish off what they started, graduate and then figure out what to do once they are done. This attitude will cause the student to waste the last year of his college education since he will only be doing it to finish his degree. To get the most of it, the student should reconsider his major and choose something that he actually likes or something that will help him get ahead in the real world.
Change
In each of the above examples, a person can ask himself the question “Knowing what I know now, is there anything that I would do differently?” If you would not start dating the girl knowing what you now know or if you wouldn’t buy that stock or choose that major, then change. Make a conscious decision to do what is best for you now, not what was best for you last year. Because if you live your life doing what was best for you last year, then you will never get lucky. You have to live your life doing what is best for you next year, in 10 years and in 50 years.

I never realized how much meaning the story of the tortoise and the hare really had. I always knew the moral of the story ever since I heard it for the first time when I was a little kid. Lately I have come to see the story on other levels.
Everybody has a talent, something that he or she is really good at. With a lot of work, they can be really great at it. The problem is that when people realize that they are good at something, they stop putting in the effort to do it. They figure that they are already at the head of the class and they can get away without going the extra mile.
I see this with business associates, friends and sometime even myself. In the past, when a client asked me for something creative that I knew would only take me a few minutes, I would usually not put much thought into it and deliver a good product. The problem is that good just isn’t good enough. To keep a client happy, you need to exceed their expectations on a constant basis. Customer retention is all about building raving fans of your business. If a client sees that you are not putting in your best effort, he is likely to leave for someone who will.
The client will probably go to the Tortoise who will devote all of their time on this client’s needs and come up with a great product, better than the client’s previous experience.
Some people get to the top by being talented but the only way to stay there in the top position is to work hard and put in effort even where your natural talents lie. I went through high school watching Michael Jordan win championship after championship. He was naturally talented but he never gave a mediocre performance. Every game that he played was him, one of the most talented players of all time, giving his best effort and that is what made him a champion.
To stay ahead of the game and always be lucky, you need to always put in the effort, even when you can get the job done with no effort.

Since the creation and popularity of the internet, the world has transitioned into the “Information Age”. Today, the most valuable asset is information because it is something that stays with you forever. Money can come and go but as long as you have the information that got you your money in the first place, you can always make it back. That is why so many rich people are able to go broke and then make more money that they had before. Most rich people have had ups and downs but always end up getting back on top. The opposite goes for lottery winners who make their money through pure chance. Lottery winners do not have the information to stay rich or to become rich again once they use up their winnings. Most lottery winners go back to their original financial position within a few years because they don’t have the information to hold onto their money.

Today, people want everything right now. They are constantly looking for cheaper, faster and better. The old school attitude of pay first and then get results does not work anymore. Companies now have to give away tons of information for free just to get people to sign up for their service or buy their product. A great example is Zecco.com. They have free and cheap stock trades which are cheaper than anyone else that I know of in the industry. Even with their incredibly low prices, they still have an entire community built into their site with all kinds of information for the trader to be as educated as possible. People from all over the world ask and answer questions through their forum. Zecco.com needs this just to get people to sign up for their service and to spread the word to get more people to subscribe.
To get ahead today, all you need is information and for the first time in history, this information is free and so easy to access. There are websites on every subject you can think of. There are even websites that teach you step by step how to do anything you want to do from starting a business to planting a flower.
Take advantage of the free information and get lucky!

When I was in grade school, I remember being absolutely petrified of raising my hand and speaking up in class. I didn’t like to ask questions because I wasn’t sure of the reaction that I would get. I would think, “Maybe I’m stupid since I don’t understand what the person is saying”. When I was involved in a conversation, just like Joey from Friends, when I didn’t understand something that was said, I would just nod as if I understood. I was always afraid of using words that I wasn’t 100% sure were used correctly.

As the years went by, I felt myself falling behind more and more and each time I had a question, I held it in because if I would have looked stupid in 1st grade, image how stupid I would look if I don’t know that information by the 5th grade. It just kept on getting worse. As time went on I was hurting myself more and more by being embarrassed to ask a simple question.
Looking back I can see that if I had just asked the questions I had when they first came up, I would not have fallen behind. Knowledge is like building a skyscraper. You can build it up as high as you want but you need a solid foundation and you have to build each level, one at a time. You can’t start out on top and work your way do
