couch-potato.jpgDepression is in my opinion one of the worst sicknesses around. It causes a downhill whirlwind that digs you deeper and deeper into your self pity and causes you to rot in everyway possible. Depression takes you off track of any goals that you may have and may have been working hard to achieve. It makes you overeat, over sleep and watch way too much pointless TV. The longer the depression goes on, the worse you get and the further away it pulls you from your goals. The eating will throw off all of your health goals such as exercising and losing weight, and the sleeping and TV suck up all of your time so you have no time left to accomplish anything else.

To the outsider, a depressed person is a very sad sight. If you care about someone who is depressed you feel terrible because there is nothing you can do and if you don’t care about the person, you just want to get away from them since they bring you down.

I’m not sure where I got this from but I believe it to be the truth about depression. I believe that depression is caused by a feeling that you are not moving towards your goals fast enough. It could be that you don’t have goals and have nowhere to go. It could also mean that you have unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve. But I think in most cases, people consciously or not have realistic goals and expectations in life. The problem here is that life does not always give you what you want. There is a famous saying that “when life gives your lemons, make lemonade”. Lucky people make the lemonade and move on to bigger and better things. Unlucky people take the lemons and don’t know what to do with them so they get depressed. Depression is the roadblock on the path toward your goals.

You will notice that one of the best ways to fight off depression is to work on a goal with determination. It doesn’t matter which goal you work on, whether it is what is holding you down or something completely unrelated, working toward any goal will cure or at least push aside your depression. That is why working out and exercising help get rid of depression and put you in a good mood. It is because you are getting healthier and everybody whether they know it or not has a need to be as healthy as possible.

To handle depression, make sure that you act as soon as the feeling sets in. Go for a run, hit the gym, or work on any other small goal that you would like to achieve and that you can see the finish line for. Each little victory moves you ahead and turns you into new person. This new person is a more successful person since he has one more victory under his belt. Make a point of becoming a better person each day and you will not have to worry about depression.

[…] I wrote yesterday about making it a point to become a better person each day. Today I want to talk about baby steps. No matter what the goal is, no matter how big it is, you can achieve it if you move towards it at a slow but steady pace. You just have to break the goal or task down into tiny little pieces and do one little piece at a time. They say that “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. It’s a great example but anyone can take anything and turn it into their own personal example. Just think of yourself and your life. When you were born, your goal was to grow up to be a toddler and then a child and then a teenager and so on. When you started school, it was you goal to graduate someday. You will notice that these goals cannot be accomplished in a day, year or multiple years, but each day you move forward towards your goal and each year you move even closer to achieving it. […]
